[ARCHIVED] JCSUD Statement on Biosolids and PFAS in Johnson County

Public Notice Graphic

February 12, 2025

In response to the emergency declaration by the Johnson County Commissioners Court yesterday, we would like to address concerns surrounding the application of biosolids in Johnson County and its implications for PFAS contamination of natural resources.

We want to emphasize that the PFAS contamination of groundwater referenced in the declaration does not affect JCSUD customers. Through the water quality monitoring parameters mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), our sampling has not detected PFAS in the groundwater from the wells that provide water to our system. We encourage any residents of Johnson County who are not on a public water system and rely on private water wells for their drinking water supply to have their well water tested.

For our surface water sampling, results have come back below the minimum reporting level for the PFAS regulated by the EPA, which means they are below the lowest measurable concentration detectable by a laboratory.

As an entity established 60 years ago as a rural water provider for agricultural and domestic water use in Johnson County, we understand the impact these agricultural producers in the affected areas are experiencing. Access to safe and clean water is fundamental to human health and thriving communities. Our mission at JCSUD is to provide safe, reliable, and affordable water to the residents of Johnson County and surrounding communities.

More information on our water quality sampling data can be found at https://www.jcsud.com/179/Drinking-Water-Quality-Report-Consumer-C or https://www.epa.gov/dwucmr/fifth-unregulated-contaminant-monitoring-rule-data-finder#data-finder

We understand the level of concern that residents have and want our customers to know we take water quality matters seriously. JCSUD has been monitoring updates to this situation since it was made public in December 2022 and will continue to follow state and federal water quality monitoring protocols to ensure that our customers continue to receive safe and reliable water.

If you have any questions regarding JCSUD water quality, please email helpinfo@jcsud.com.
