[ARCHIVED] Customer Notification for Source Water and Disinfectant Change

Public Notice Graphic

As part of Johnson County Special Utility District’s (JCSUD) ongoing commitment to providing customers with the highest quality water service, this notice is being provided to make customers aware of a change in the source of water. On June 17th, 2024, the water source will change from solely groundwater to a combination of groundwater and surface water. Previously, the water was supplied strictly by free chlorinated well water drawn from the Trinity and Paluxy Aquifers. With this change, we will continue to use the same well water but will now also incorporate surface water purchased from the City of Mansfield. This surface water contains chloramines, a disinfectant made by combining chlorine and ammonia.

This notice is specific to JCSUD customers in Pressure Plane 24, located on the east side of Interstate 35 W, north of the City of Alvarado, west of Luis Drive, and North of HWY 67. This area is also bound south of Highway 67 on the west side of the City of Alvarado and CR 401, north of FM 2738, and west of CR 204 in Grandview.

The following information is provided by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) regarding the transition from chlorinated to chloraminated drinking water sources:

This change is intended to benefit our customers by reducing the levels of disinfection byproducts in the system, while still providing protection from waterborne disease. However, change to chloramines can cause problems to persons dependent on dialysis machines. A condition known as hemolytic anemia can occur if the disinfectant is not completely removed from the water that is used for the dialysate. Consequently, the pretreatment scheme used for the dialysis units must include some means, such as a charcoal filter, for removing the chloramine prior to this date. Medical facilities should also determine if additional precautions are required for other medical equipment. In addition, chloraminated water may be toxic to fish. If you have a fish tank, please make sure that the chemicals or filters that you are using are designed for use in water that has been treated with chloramines. You may also need to change the type of filter that you use for fish tanks.

If you have any questions regarding this matter, please call the JCSUD main office at (817)760-5220.
